Grassroots Mapping

Grassroots Mapping was started by the Public Laboratory for Open Technology and Science to produce aerial imagery of the effects of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. The process they use is balloon mapping, a simplified and more immediate way to obtain aerial imagery, than by satellite or airplanes. In Louisiana these images are being submitted to the Public Laboratory Archive so we can all see the damages inflicted by this man-made disaster, but you can also buy a kit through their Kickstarter campaign and use it to map your neighborhood, pretty rad right?

Multi-Tool Collar Stays

There is no excuse for a rumpled collar. And thanks to this bundle of awesomeness, there is no excuse to not be able to tighten the odd loose screw, cut a length of rope (one never knows), or open a beer. If Chuck Norris were a gentleman’s accessory, he would be this badass.

Strandbeest | Theo Jansen

Animaris Umerus walking – June ’09 from Strandbeest on Vimeo.

Theo Jansen makes skeleton animals out of recycled plastic bottles, a bicycle pump and plastic tubes that thrive on wind so they don’t have to eat. He wants to put the animals out in herds on beaches so they can live their lives to the fullest. So amazing.

Everyday Carry

I might be slightly obsessed with this blog, after my friend Nate sent it to me. Sexy pictures of the things that people carry on their person every single day.

If you’re wondering, “Why all the guns and knives?” I will mention that all the photos/descriptions are user-submitted, and then I will refer you to the site’s mission statement:
“Everyday Carry, or EDC, generally refers to small items or gadgets worn, carried, or made available in pockets, holsters, or bags on a daily basis to manage common tasks or for use in unexpected situations or emergencies. In a broader sense, it is a lifestyle, discipline, or philosophy of preparedness.”

“Tele-present Water” by David Bowen

David Bowen’s installation, on view at The National Museum in Wroclaw, Poland, “re-creates a wave by drawing real-time information from a buoy on the Pacific Ocean. The wave intensity and frequency is scaled and transferred to the mechanical grid structure,” through the use of wires. We <3 the ocean, and we're always interested in the intersection of art, information, and technology. Plus, it just looks pretty. Check out the video below. | via BOOOOOOM

See-Through Canoe

I want one of these. As much as I love the water, I usually need something separating me from those disgusting little fish. I will use this on low-key, lazy Sundays, when breaking out the Seabreacher X just seems excessive. | via Geekologie

Feather Pen | Maison Martin Margiela + ENO

We have an avid pen collector in the house… and it might be me. This is an open to call to all those that love me, the holidays are fast approaching and you will need to order soon if it is going to make it under my tree in time.

A goose or ostrich feather adorning a bic pen, all in white, by the illustrious Martin Margiela in collaboration with Paris design house ENO.

Till You Stop | Mischer’Traxler

As a part of Vienna Design Week, design team Mischer’Traxler created an automatic cake decorating machine. Participants controlled the machine which started by piping icing in a Spirograph-like pattern, they could then have the machine add edible silver balls. The user has control over how much decoration is added, but they can’t restart the machine until a new cake has been inserted.

The project is being exhibited at the MAK Museum as part of the ‘Design Criminals’ show which looks back at Adolf Loos’ early 20th Century essay, Ornament and Crime.
