Stereogranimator | NYPL

GIF made with the NYPL Labs Stereogranimator - view more at http://stereo.nypl.org/gallery/index
I made this GIF using the NYPL Labs Stereogranimator!

Stereogranimator is a website created by NYPL Labs, an incubator of experimentation at the New York Public Library. Stereogranimator is inspired by Reaching for the Out of Reach, a project by Joshua Heineman, which he himself was inspired by the NYPL’s vast collection of 19th century stereographs. In case you didn’t know, stereographs were created as a way to show more depth and 3-D quality in photos, kind of a pre-movie technology. The 3-D quality is achieved by placing two off-set, almost identical photos next to each other, the viewers brain then combines the images together creating the 3-D effect. Viewers used to use coin-operated machines or special viewing glasses to get the effect but now with the advent of computer technology, we have an all new way to view them! Via the GIF, the internet’s favorite viewing format <3

Esquire Cover Gallery

Esquire magazine has an archive of their covers since 1933. It’s really interesting to mouse through the gallery and see the evolution of the designs. My favorites are from the 1950s, lots of collage, the introduction of attractive women on the covers and a great graphic sense. A sample of my favorites below:

Vandasye

Vandasye is a Vienna-based office for design founded by Georg Schnitzer and Peter Umgeher. Their site is organized really interestingly, with lots of links to inspiration/reference for each project. I’m really diggin it. Below are some selections from their “25 vases” series, which I think are Super Cool.

Lucas Maassen & Sons Furniture Factory

Dutch designer Lucas Maassen employs his 3 young sons to create these enchanting pieces. From their site:

“Due to Dutch child labour laws it is only possible for Thijme, Julian and Maris to work for 3 hours a week. As a result of this the production speed has became a crucial factor in the process.”

The video below was beautifully shot by Mike Roelofs. | via Architizer

Nudibranchs

I just learned what these are today! I was in awe of their beautiful color and when I saw the picture of the one above, I thought for sure the internet was fucking with me. But according to Wikipedia this is a real creature. So, what is it? It is a nudibranch, from the Latin nudus, naked, and the Greek brankhia for gills. They evolved from a hard-shelled mollusk that shed it’s shell after the initial larval stage.

Nudibranchs are often called ‘sea slugs’ but they are actually from taxonomic groups (nerd alert).

I have never seen one of these in the wild, although it is stated you can find them around the world, I will definitely be on the lookout the next time I’m in the Keys.

Nudibranch body shapes and colors vary greatly and unlike other types of gastropods they are bilaterally symmetrical externally and internally. These little guys can grow anywhere from teeny tiny (.79in) to a probably totally amazing at 2 feet in length. They are hermaphrodites, like other awesome shelled and sluggish creatures. And they are also carnivores, and some are even cannibals. In order to defend themselves from predators, nudibranchs have evolved different tactics like camouflage, bright contrasting colorations that warn off predators that they are distasteful or poisonous, or they eat other various poisonous creatures like man-o-wars, and store the toxins in their body, thus making them repellent to their predators, cool huh?

It turns out nudibranch are not recommended for personal aquariums as they are highly specialized predators and require very specific feeding rituals. Which is a bummer, because IF I had an aquarium, I would totally want a bunch of these rad dudes hanging out.

“Tele-present Water” by David Bowen

David Bowen’s installation, on view at The National Museum in Wroclaw, Poland, “re-creates a wave by drawing real-time information from a buoy on the Pacific Ocean. The wave intensity and frequency is scaled and transferred to the mechanical grid structure,” through the use of wires. We <3 the ocean, and we're always interested in the intersection of art, information, and technology. Plus, it just looks pretty. Check out the video below. | via BOOOOOOM

Presentation Party Night (PPN) | Dan Dreke & Crew

If we know you, you’ve probably heard of Presentation Party Night, PPN for short. If you live in New York or have talked about visiting, we’ve probably encouraged/nagged/reminded you to attend. It’s arguably our favorite night of every month. Started by Dan Dreke in the summer of 2010, PPN is a night of discussions and lectures from your peers on the third Sunday of every month.

The premise being 6 people create 10 minute presentations on the topic of their choice, with a 5 minute discussion afterward. Beers are passed around, everyone listens with intent, intellectual and oftentimes drunken debates breakout, and potluck foods are wolfed. Presentations have ranged from a How-to on DIY Ultralight Backpacking, The Uncanny Valley and Transhumanism to name a few. Inevitably, you walk away from every event learning something new – which is usually pretty hard to do and still have fun while doing it.

The best thing about PPN though is the group effort that goes into putting the event on. Along with Dan the founder, we all work together to keep this event going – from unique flyer designs every month, to the branding and logo design of the event, to setting up all the technology to make the presentations happen, to manning the “bar” and tip jar, we all play a part. It feels really great to be a part of something interesting, fun and mind opening that continues to grow and has so much potential.

If you’re in New York this Sunday, we hope to see you there. Check out the flyer below for more info and join the group on Facebook to keep in touch!
