For Japan With Love | Disaster Relief

\

For Japan With Love is a site created by Utterly Engaged and Ever Ours.  Over 1000 blogs participated in their bloggers day of silence which occured this past Friday. A simple effort to create awareness that grew into a really large event. They have also been accepting donations, their goal was to raise $5,500 but they are already up to $59,000 and counting. The money is going toward ShelterBox – a really great organization that creates these kind of shelter/survival boxes for disaster relief. From their website:

“We deliver the essentials a family needs to survive in the immediate aftermath of a disaster.

Each large, green ShelterBox is tailored to a disaster but typically contains a disaster relief tent for an extended family, blankets, water storage and purification equipment, cooking utensils, a stove, a basic tool kit, a children’s activity pack and other vital items.”

Help For Japan With Love by donating here and spreading the word about the amazing organization ShelterBox.

Emergency Shelters | Shigeru Ban

Renowned architecture firm Shigeru Ban have been developing emergency shelter/partition kits for earthquake relief since the 2004 Niigata earthquakes in Japan. Ban recognized that after the quake the biggest issue was housing the massive amount of people left without homes and shelter. Crowded into shelters, gymnasiums and stadiums, the usually private people were forced to get much more personal with their neighbors. In order to ease tension and give a sense of calm, Ban used cardboard pieces, first for people to sleep on, instead of the hard floors, and then as some people were able to leave the shelters, the cardboard was used to build walls.

Since then, Ban has been perfecting a kit to deal with these types of situations in Japan. The kit as of now includes -

“a strut-beam structure using paper tubes that can be furnished faster and conveniently at any site, with white cloth for partitions. The joints were made of plywood, and ropes were used for braces .For flexible partitioning depending on the family size, the modularized unit dimensions were standardized at 180cm. For administration, it is impossible to forecast partition needs, so low cost and high speed were the priorities in developing this partition system.” (from the Shigeru Ban website)

Ban is collecting donations to help them make more kits and to deliver them to the many emergency shelters. They are also seeking volunteers in the area, please visit their website to see how you can help.

Concert for Japan | Japan Society

Since the crisis in Japan began, creative communities around the world have done their part to do what they can. As a lot of artists or freelancers we know are living on a shoe-string budget, it can often be difficult finding a way you can contribute to causes, even when you feel so strongly about them. By being able to offer their creative services, ie selling prints to raise money or putting on benefit concerts, everyone is able to do their part.

This week we will be featuring different, creative ways we’ve seen people raising money and awareness for the cause, starting with ‘Concert for Japan’ put on by the Japan Society in New York City. For people on a budget, it’s just $5 to get in and enjoy music by the likes of Philip Glass and Lou Reed, those with a little more to spend can purchase seated tickets for $100. Either way, all proceeds go to Japan Society’s Earthquake Relief Fund (which has already raised a whopping $1,493,808 and rising!)

Walking in LA

We’re planning our annual trip to Los Angeles for 2011. We like to go when winter hits the hardest in NYC, that way we feel like we’re cheating Old Man Winter just a little. Going back for a visit always brings a lot of nostalgia, heavy hearts are lifted and margaritas and tacos are consumed in obscene proportions.

One of the annoying things about Los Angeles is that everyone assumes they know it since they’ve seen it on TV and in the movies. One of the things they “know” about LA is that nobody walks there. But after living there for a few years we learned you actually CAN walk in LA and it is rather fun. One of the best resources for adventuring in the City of Angels is this site conveniently named Walking in LA. If you live in the city or are just visiting, check it out and get some exercise to counteract all that pollution you’re causing driving to and from work everyday!

Feather Pen | Maison Martin Margiela + ENO

We have an avid pen collector in the house… and it might be me. This is an open to call to all those that love me, the holidays are fast approaching and you will need to order soon if it is going to make it under my tree in time.

Sandwich Magazine

We’re huge fans of sandwiches.. what better way to comprise a meal than to grab a bunch of ingredients, slap them between 2 slices of bread and call it a day. There’s so much variety with it too, from your nostalgic PB n’ J to banh mi to falafel. You can cross any cultural boundary and there is something sandwich-like for you to enjoy. That’s why we really appreciate meatpaper’s new issue which includes a mini-magazine entirely devoted to SANDWICHES. Good Magazine provided an epic sandwich infographic that Sandwich Mag’s editors describe as “the most comprehensive infographic of interconnected sandwich genetics currently in existence.” Um. HELL YES.

Canstruction | NYC

(Ashley’s favorite animal <3)

It’s Canstruction time again! Every year architecture, design and engineer firms around NYC compete to see who can build the coolest structures out of canned foods. Once the competition is over and the public show is closed, all of the structures are dissembled and the cans are donated to local food banks and shelters.  New Yorkers can check it out now through 11/22. More info here.

Till You Stop | Mischer’Traxler

As a part of Vienna Design Week, design team Mischer’Traxler created an automatic cake decorating machine. Participants controlled the machine which started by piping icing in a Spirograph-like pattern, they could then have the machine add edible silver balls. The user has control over how much decoration is added, but they can’t restart the machine until a new cake has been inserted.

The project is being exhibited at the MAK Museum as part of the ‘Design Criminals’ show which looks back at Adolf Loos’ early 20th Century essay, Ornament and Crime.
