I made this GIF using the NYPL Labs Stereogranimator!
Stereogranimator is a website created by NYPL Labs, an incubator of experimentation at the New York Public Library. Stereogranimator is inspired by Reaching for the Out of Reach, a project by Joshua Heineman, which he himself was inspired by the NYPL’s vast collection of 19th century stereographs. In case you didn’t know, stereographs were created as a way to show more depth and 3-D quality in photos, kind of a pre-movie technology. The 3-D quality is achieved by placing two off-set, almost identical photos next to each other, the viewers brain then combines the images together creating the 3-D effect. Viewers used to use coin-operated machines or special viewing glasses to get the effect but now with the advent of computer technology, we have an all new way to view them! Via the GIF, the internet’s favorite viewing format <3
