Stereogranimator | NYPL

GIF made with the NYPL Labs Stereogranimator - view more at http://stereo.nypl.org/gallery/index
I made this GIF using the NYPL Labs Stereogranimator!

Stereogranimator is a website created by NYPL Labs, an incubator of experimentation at the New York Public Library. Stereogranimator is inspired by Reaching for the Out of Reach, a project by Joshua Heineman, which he himself was inspired by the NYPL’s vast collection of 19th century stereographs. In case you didn’t know, stereographs were created as a way to show more depth and 3-D quality in photos, kind of a pre-movie technology. The 3-D quality is achieved by placing two off-set, almost identical photos next to each other, the viewers brain then combines the images together creating the 3-D effect. Viewers used to use coin-operated machines or special viewing glasses to get the effect but now with the advent of computer technology, we have an all new way to view them! Via the GIF, the internet’s favorite viewing format <3

Grassroots Mapping

Grassroots Mapping was started by the Public Laboratory for Open Technology and Science to produce aerial imagery of the effects of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. The process they use is balloon mapping, a simplified and more immediate way to obtain aerial imagery, than by satellite or airplanes. In Louisiana these images are being submitted to the Public Laboratory Archive so we can all see the damages inflicted by this man-made disaster, but you can also buy a kit through their Kickstarter campaign and use it to map your neighborhood, pretty rad right?

Pictures to follow of our magical tree once it’s all set up.

Cindy Sherman | Balenciaga

Cindy Sherman created this series of photos wearing clothes from Balenciaga back in 2008. The photos are set up to comment on the never ending supply of party photos in magazines and websites, showing aging socialites, party girls and boys, and the fashionably disdainful.

This series was lesser known than some of her other collaborations (Marc Jacobs, Harpers Bazaar, etc) until this year’s Fashion’s Night Out in NYC, where her work was showcased inside the Balenciaga flagship store in Chelsea while Karen Elson performed songs off her new album. Needless to say, it was a hit.
